This polished brass plaque measures at 10 centimetres and depicts the famous signal made by Nelson during the Battle of Trafalgar – England expects that every man shall do his duty. This was sent from Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory at the start of the war on October 21st, 1805. After this decisive naval engagement, Britain got control of the seas and was able to remove the possibility of a French conquest. The significance of the victory as well as Nelson’s death during the battle made the phrase very popular and it has been quoted, paraphrased, depicted and referenced ever since.
